The Government of Canada has started a new community-driven program named Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot. This program is designed for smaller communities to attract skilled foreign workers or international students to work and live in those communities. 

This program will help the participating communities to meet local labor market needs. Also, the newcomer is accepted to contribute to the economic development of those communities. This program was launched in early 2019 after the success of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot program.

Participated Communities

In this community-driven pilot program, currently, about 11 community has been selected to participate. These involved communities can now work with the Canadian government to recruit candidates to fill their economic needs. The participating communities are;

  • North Bay, Ontario
  • Sudbury, Ontario
  • Timmins, Ontario
  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
  • Thunder Bay, Ontario
  • Brandon, Manitoba
  • Altona/Rhineland, Manitoba
  • Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
  • Claresholm, Alberta
  • Vernon, British Columbia
  • West Kootenay, British Columbia

Eligibility Criteria for Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot Program

As a candidate, you must meet the following criteria to be eligible for this pilot program.

Get a Recommendation

The first condition of this program, the candidate must get a recommendation from one of those participating communities. You have to apply in those communities for a job that suits your background. Then the community will check;

  • Your intention to live in the community
  • Whether the job can fill the economic needs
  • Your work experience and skills
  • Your bonds to the community

Upon the above factors, the community will decide whether to offer a job or not. 

Work Experience

You need at least one year or 1560 hours of continuous work experience in the past three years. The work experience must be from one occupation, but they can be from different employers. The candidate from Canada must have temporary resident status.

The Government of Canada allowing refugees to settle in Canada. Refugees are those people who fled from their country due to a justifiable fear of harassment. They are forced to flee and cannot return to their country.

Valid Job Offer

To apply for this program, you must have a valid job offer from any of those communities. The job offer must be;

  • Full time
  • Non-seasonal
  • Permanent
  • With the wage that meets Jon banks minimum wage according to your job’s NOC

Also, the job offer must form the same skill level or work experience. 

Education Requirements

You must have either a Canadian high school diploma or an educational credential assessment (ECA) report from a designated organization. The report must be less than five years old on your date of application.

Language Requirements

To prove your English proficiency, you must meet the minimum language requirements. It should be according to the NOC category of your job offer.

Prove Your Settlement Fund

You must prove that you have enough money to support yourself and your family while settling in the community. 

Intend To Live In the Community

Finally, you must show your plan to live in that particular community.
