Here are the Nicest Parks in Surrey, BC

October 7, 2021BY Immigration In Canada

Thinking about immigrating to Surrey? This Surrey parks and recreation guide might help you decide whether this fast-growing city is right for you and your family.

Surrey, BC has more than 250 parks and more than 300 km of trail space. This is why it’s known as the “city of parks.”

What is the biggest park in Surrey?

Surrey Bend Regional Park covers 3.4 square kilometers of land. It was designed to protect local ecosystems along the Fraser River Floodplain. It’s a great area for bird watching all year round.

If you’ve got a solid hour you can take an ambling stroll around the park trails. There’s a covered picnic area where you can enjoy a meal in the quiet while enjoying a nice view of the river. It also offers very nice views of the hills.

Because it’s an ecological site it is not a highly developed park. If quiet and nature don’t appeal to you then you’ll want to check out some of the other offerings. Still, it’s a lovely opportunity for getting out into nature without having to get too far from the city.

How many beaches are there in Surrey?

There are three beaches in Surrey.

The first is Crescent Beach. You’ll find multiple restaurants near this beach, as well as beautiful views, public bathrooms, and a swimming area with a lifeguard. You can also take a trail walk around the wetlands areas. The beach itself is more driftwood than sand, which means there’s plenty of places to sit. The water is also warmer than you’d expect from a British Columbia beach.

There are piers so you can go sailing and boating, though paddleboarding, kayaking, kiteboarding, and windsurfing are more popular.

The second is Blackie Spit. Blackie Spit is close to Crescent Beach and offers lovely views of both the bay and the mountains. An 107 meter boardwalk spans the beach. This is a great beach to bring your dogs as there are two off-leash dog areas.

This beach is one of the top birdwatching areas in Surrey. It’s also home to the Dunsmuir Community Gardens, farmed by locals and used to provide food. This is considered to be one of the most family-friendly spots, so bring the kids and get ready for a great day.

The third is Brownsville Bar Park. If you’re looking for a sandy beach as opposed to a rock beach, this is the beach to visit. You’ll have 300 meters of waterfront access as well as a walking loop to enjoy. Many of the local residents use this as a spot to fish in the river, and the sunset views are considered to be some of the best in the province. It’s not considered to be a major swimming spot, but many families like to picnic here so their kids can play in the sand.

What are the longest trails in Surrey?

The Salmonberry, Yellow Arum, Douglas Fir and Hemlock Loop in the Green Timbers Urban Forest stretches for 5.63 kilometers. This trail is well-maintained and peaceful, offering a chance to get into nature and to relax for awhile. Go in the early morning to beat the crowds.

Sometimes this trail does end up close enough to the roads to generate some traffic noise, so bring some earphones and something peaceful to listen to if you’d like to block that out.

There’s a good chance you’ll spot a little bit of wildlife like rabbits, beavers, and birds.

Where are the nicest picnic spots in Surrey?

Fleetwood Park is a favorite of many picnickers thanks to  an abundance of shelter and play space for the kids. The shelters are open on a first-come, first serve basis, though they may be reserved for events. During the summer there’s also a spray park that is open from 10 AM to 8 PM.

Bear Creek Park is  nice enough that people even like to hold weddings here. There are 7 picnic shelters available on a first-come, first-serve basis, or you can rent the Bear Creek Pavilion or Gardens. They also host summer theatre events in both English and Punjabi, mostly aimed at kids. It’s also a great place for exercise as it contains lots of outdoor fitness equipment for cardio and strength training.

Redwood Park is another local favorite. It’s a large urban forest full of exotic trees with over 5 km of nature trails to enjoy. It also has play equipment and year-round picnic shelters. The four shelters are available on a first-come, first-serve basis unless you reserve them for an event. The views here are quite breathtaking!

Which Surrey parks are the most kid-friendly?

If you want to take your kids to a bright, shining, brand new playground then try Edgewood Park. There are kid-sized climbing boulders, zip lines, teeter toters, and swings. There are also plenty of places for kids to ride their bikes and scooters.

Redwood Park has two play areas, one for big kids and one for smaller kids. There is a lot of open space for kids to run and to get rowdy.

For kids who love to climb, there’s Blumsen Park, filled with lots of kid-friendly rocks and rope-climbing structures.

Really these three playgrounds are just scratching the surface. There are dozens of cool playgrounds throughout the city.

Which parks are friendliest to dogs?

Surrey offers several off-leash parks, including:

  • Wills Brook Park
  • Blackie Spit Park
  • Clayton Dog Park
  • Hawthorne Rotary Park
  • Freedom Dog Park
  • Tynehead Regional Park

Make sure you stay within the designated leash-free areas and that you put your dog on a leash any time you are outside of those areas.
