The International Experience Canada (IEC) is a Government of Canada initiative that allows young citizens aged 18 to 35 years to go to work and travel abroad too. The aim is to gain experience and use opportunities all over the world. Almost 30 countries are under this program.
The procedure for obtaining work permits is simplified. Three types of work permits are available:
- Working Holiday: Finance your vacation by working temporarily abroad. The “work” part of the trip will earn a salary to finance travel during the stay.
- Young Professionals: Who eager to obtain real professional work experience abroad.
- International Co-op Internship: For students who intend to do an internship abroad as part of their degree program.

There are five essential criteria to be eligible for the International Experience Canada (IEC) program:
- Age: being over 18 and under 30 at the time of application. But for some countries, the maximum age is under 36.
- Passport: hold a valid passport until the end of your stay (at least)
- Resources: Can justify a minimum of CAD 2,500 in funds.
- Insurance: have medical insurance that covers you in case of accident or illness because the Canadian health system will not support you.

The EIC process has two main stages: the creation of the profile and the invitation to apply for a work permit.
Step 1: Creating the profile:
If you are qualified for EIC by answering a series of questions, continue with the creation of your online EIC profile.
Once you have completed Step 1, you will have created a profile in the International Co-op Internship Pool.

Candidates enrolled in the EIC basins will be regularly invited to apply for a work permit. After accepting the invitation to apply for a work permit, you must complete the online forms, download the requested documents, and pay the participation fee of CAD 126 by credit card.
It is at this stage that your employer abroad must submit an internship offer and pay the employer’s compliance fee (CAD 230) using the Employer Portal.
