Who to apply for a passport application:

To apply for a passport, you can fill out the form online. However, you must then print it before going to the office.

Documents to provide for adults:

  • The passport application form;
  • Two recent identity photographs of size 50 x 70 mm identical and entirely similar, front and bare head, on a light background, neutral, plain, and in color. The date of shooting must be less than six months; 
  • One proof of your home address, your first and last name (original and photocopy);
  • A test that ensures your Canadian citizenship;
  • A complete copy of your birth certificate. If you have a secure identity card (even if it is out of date), you do not have to provide any proof of civil status;

The passport application form must be completed and signed. When submitting your new passport, you must return the old one unless it contains one or more valid visas.

Passport application for minors:

A minor, regardless of age, must have a passport valid for five years. The request must be made by a person exercising parental authority.

The documents to be provided are:

  • The passport application form;
  • Two recent identity photographs (size should be as previously mentioned)
  • Current proof of the parent’s home (in original);
  • A piece of identification from the parent applying;
  • A complete copy of the minor’s birth certificate, less than three months old. If the child has a secure identity card, no proof of civil status to provide.
  • If the parents are divorced or separated, a test of custody must be provided.

The citizenship certificate is official proof of your Canadian citizenship. Canadians born in Canada or abroad to Canadian parents can apply to prove their Canadian citizenship. Remember: this is not a passport or a second ID card.

The validity of the passport

The validity period of the electronic passport:

  • Ten years for the passport issued to a person of full age (16 or more)
  • Five years for the passport issued to a minor regardless of age (less than 15)

To renew your passport, fill out a form with all the necessary documents and pay a fixed amount. 

Cost:

The cost varies with different types. The fee for a five years passport is 120$, and ten years is 160$. Although they are higher if you are outside Canada. In that case, the cost will be 190$ and 260$, respectively. 

The price for a minor’s passport is 56$ inside Canada and 100$ outside Canada.

Processing time:

After applying, it will take ten business days. It can take up to 20 business day if you use through a service agent or receive by mail.
