If you belong from outside the country, you can work in Canada as a temporary worker or as a worker who is there to gain international experience. Whatever the type, those workers will only be considered legal according to national laws by dint of a work permit.

Like every license, this work permit has a validation date. So when or before it expires, you should think of renewing or extending it. That way, you can keep your employment legal and stay out of trouble.

Your type of work influences the application you would make for it. Hence, to know how to extend your work permit in Canada, you will need a grasp of the following.

How do I extend my work permit in Canada?

If you are subject to any of the following four situations, you have to apply for renewal.

  1. Your job duration is extended.
  2. The nature of your job or the job itself changes.
  3. You want a permanent residence in Canada.
  4. You have to leave Canada for some time and return.

If your job duration increases, naturally, your work permit needs to be extended as soon as you are aware of it.

Again, when you have a new job, you need an entirely new work permit, and the old one is no longer valid.

It could be that you want a residence in Canada, then you have to file for renewal under any of its PR or Permanent Residence Categories.

Lastly, it could be that you have to leave Canada under some emergency, and you want to retain your position as an employee in the country after you come back. In that case, you can arrange for an extension of the permit. When you return, you may find that your work permit is still being processed.

In that case, you enter Canada as a visitor, no longer a worker of the previous status. However, if the process is complete, you can resume work as soon as you re-enter Canada. All the while, you may be asked to prove your financial sustainability in the country.

But if none of these happen and your process was never completed, you have to ask for a new permit to start work again.

Temporary Worker

If you are a temporary worker who needs to extend the end date of his work permit or change the conditions of his employment as mentioned in that work permit, you have to make an application before 30 days of the date listed. The application can be made in a paper or online.

The law also requires you to apply if you are taking a new job or even the same job but under slightly different terms than the previous, under a new employer. You are not allowed to start your new career as long as you don’t have your original permit, even if that means you are not able to join your first day at work because you are supposed to get the license an hour later on the same day.

Experience Gainer

Students or people in general from other countries may come to work in Canada to gain experience for a short time. But a lot may happen in that time. You may have finished your working experience before it was due and impressed by you, the employer now wants to extend his terms with you. Or you may have been fired from work.

The gravity of the problem may ask you to have your work permit renewed or extended. In this case, you would have to apply under Form IMM5710E for the necessary procedures to commence.

Currently, the program for Live-in Caregivers isn’t considering new applications for work permits, other than which they previously had, so if you are one of the previous applicants under this program and need renewal, good news for you.

You can have your application submitted either written on paper or through their website online and ask for an extension of the date. Again, your permit might need no renewal, but you have changed your employer and are currently working for someone new or have moved to a different location. In that case, if you want, you can also ask the LCP to change the terms of your employment.

But don’t forget the crucial part: you have to apply for the extension of dates 30 days before the date listed. Sometimes, it takes longer than 30 days to finish the process of renewal. And as long as the renewal isn’t happening, your old status under the old dates will continue. So, if you want to play safe, you may apply even before the 30 days.

If I want to become a permanent resident, how do I extend my work permit in Canada?

Suppose you have been working in Canada for quite some time and there are 4 months or so remaining, That is when you decide to opt for a permanent residence in Canada. You can then apply for the immigration process.

This entire thing is called an “open work permit.” It allows you to continue working as a temporary worker or experience gainer while the officials process your immigration application.

To apply for it, you have to first apply for a work permit inside the country (if you weren’t already) and mention your request for gaining an Open Work Permit.

It should be clear now about how to extend your work permit in Canada. These were the basics of it. For detailed information, you could ask for help from higher officials or your employer regarding the extension/renewal process.
