If you need to travel to Canada for a short period, you must need a valid visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). You must have at least one of these, not both. In some cases, you will only need a valid passport.

  • A valid passport
  • An alien’s passport – (A travel document issued by a citizen to a non-citizen or stateless person.)
  • A permit to re-enter the U.S (Form I-327) – (A travel document issued by “United State Citizenship and Immigration Services” to U.S. lawful green card holder; to let them travel abroad.)
  • A U.S. refugee travel document (Form I-571) – (A travel document issued by the United States to a refugee to allow them to travel abroad.)
  • Other refugee travel documents for a stateless person.

For Valid Passport Holder:

Are you a dual citizen of Canada and another country?

  • If so, you only need a valid Canadian passport. (The American-Canadian dial citizens only need a valid U.S. passport. Also, they have to meet the essential criteria to enter Canada with proper identifications.)
  • If no, then check whether you are a lawful resident of the U.S with a Green Card. 

Case 1: If yes, you’ll only need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). 

Or else,

Case 2: You’ll need a visitor visa if you plan to visit your family and stay for less than six months. Or, you may need a super visa to stay up to 2 years. At first, check whether you are eligible or not. 

Case 3: If you are planning to attend a business meeting or conference, you’ll need a visitor visa. You must need a letter of invitation from your partner in Canada. Also, provide sufficient proof that you have a job. 

Case 4: To transit through Canada, you’ll only need a visitor visa if you plan to visit Canada in between. Or if you stay less than 48 hours in between flights, then you will need a transit visa.
